[HAM] MDF

I'm not going to add much to PDA's post, however a few observations,
even if from a 122A novice. Up to this point I've only worked on one.
And that was to only change out a few resistors & triacs.

This week I pickuped up two. One, virtually never used, still on
pallet with manuals stapled to pallet & the other used heavily in a
church. I know the history of the latter.

IMO, far too much is made of the MDF issue. With the exception of it
being used for the bottom shelf, the floor of the cabinet. That's the
only problem I have. Those joints take a beating. As for the woofer &
rotor shelf, eh, so what. Lots & lots of earlier models out there
with MDF shelves. We all like plywood. MDF speaks CHEAP.

These 2 boxes I picked up are #'s 7054699 & 7055608. Don't know when
they were made but if the #'s are consecutive, these are less than a
thousand units apart. A very cursory glance shows the obvious change
in the louvre cuts on the top front. 4 shorter cuts on the former vs.
2 long cuts on the latter.

VERY LIBERAL use of glue & screws on the length of all joints on the
former, & no visible glue except for the glue blocks on the latter.
Maybe it was a neater glue job...? I don't think so. It sounds like
it was never glued & joined together properly as well. Along with
some awful looking repair jobs in the amp I'm sure it'll sound fine
with a little love. And a ferro fluid driver & a few small tweaks.

The earlier box sounds *great*. Again, it was hardly used at all. It
came with a Hammond Model G on Sleazebuy© that kinda went overlooked.
That box had a Trek pre in it & all the AC wiring replaced by
somebody that did an excellent job. And the chous genny was taken out
as well. I sold the organ the next day & got a free 122A. Maybe
that's why it sounds better...?

Now, if the newer122/147A's are 100% MDF, that's another issue. I
wouldn't know, but Harvey?

deteriorated beyond repair, except where it has been subjected to
fire or explosion."
