Greetings
As an emerging jazz organist (C3/147) living in New Zealand where I think
there is one other that I know of, I would have to agree with Scott where he
said:
"And make no mistake, they ALL listened to his records and went to his
> shows. McDuff for instance, who never took a single lesson from JOS, told
> me that he and others went to LOTS of his shows, "

Based upon my own experience of the last twelve months where my own playing
ability has gone ahead in leaps and bounds all because of a tour of New
Zealand mid last year by Michel Benebig, a jazz organist from New Caledonia.
Until then I had never seen a jazz organist, ever, in the flesh or by video.
(I'm now fifty, and visits to New Zealand by jazz organists are extremely
rare). I have many many CDs by most of the greats, but it wasn't until I
saw Michel who very kindly allowed me to video both his soundcheck and
concert, and was able ask "how do you do that"? that things began to fall
into place for me. I continue to use that video as a learning reference and
that, coupled with my CD listening, I believe is now giving me an edge. In
fact, at a gig I played last Sunday night, a very well respected local sax
player whom I haven't played with for about a year now said "man, you're
getting pretty sharp on that organ - you've been practicing"
If seeing just one show has made the difference it has to my playing, I can
see how it must have a made huge difference to the likes of McDuff etc in
being able to attend many of JOS 's shows.
I am envious of you guys in the States where you have Smith, McGriff,
DeFrancesco, Monaco etc, etc on tour. It must be wonderful being able to go
and see these 'Masters' as they come around.
Regards to all
Graham Abraham
