[HAM] How do I get overdrive on an L-100 spinet?Jackson, Ian ijackson at lancaster.gov.ukFri Aug 11 10:28:35 CDT 2006
As a guitarist you will be aware that 'that overdriven sound' is a pretty vague description... The Leslie distortion, as exemplified by Santana (first 3 albums), Deep Purple (early and late, but NOT Smoke/Highway Star etc), Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep etc requires a hot organ signal going into a tube-amplified Leslie, everything on 10 (or above), and (optionally) various degraded or out-of-spec components in the signal path to add to the general mayhem. The Marshall distortion (eg Purple's Machine Head album, and the related 'Making Of...' DVD) simply requires a lineout from your L. This will be plenty hot enough (and then some) to make any tube geetar amp scream... Unfortunately, with the latter option, you'll have no Leslie swirl, and only the L's cheesy vibrato channel to provide any animation. I may be wrong (???), but I think Keith Emerson's ELP debut at the Isle of Wight Festival (you were minus 16 at the time!) used this second setup - and was actually able to get feedback... --UK Jake -----Original Message----- From: hammond-bounces at zeni.net [mailto:hammond-bounces at zeni.net] On Behalf Of DougJ1986 at aol.com Sent: 11 August 2006 13:10 To: hammond at zeni.net Subject: Re: [HAM] How do I get overdrive on an L-100 spinet? excuse my ignorance as I am a 20 year guitarist and a 2 month Hammondist! I am just looking for that overdriven sound..... since I have an L-101 spinet and 2 non-pre-amped leslie speakers, is it fair to assume that I will be unable to get an overdrive from the Leslie[s] and will be left with the Marshall option?
