[HAM] Recapping tone generatorsMichael Fulk strangewarrior1 at earthlink.netSun Aug 20 20:14:48 CDT 2006
I hope to God that you redo the AO-28 before you recap; you may find that yer troubles are cured. >I always tell people if they don't like it better than when they brought it here, I will put an old wax cap genny back in for them. Never had to do it. That's better. Bueno para ti. I heve heard recapped organs and they *selectively* screamed. To me, it was unlistenable, but I bet that many rock 'n rollers would love it, like that total ninny, Mr.Allman Fulk > [Original Message] > From: JOHN HABURAY <haburay at sbcglobal.net> > To: <hammond at zeni.net> > Date: 8/19/2006 3:03:16 PM > Subject: [HAM] Recapping tone generators > > I think it depends on what sound you want for what reason as far as recapping goes. I want my Hammonds to be bright, clean, and loud while keeping them and a Leslie as stock as possible. I do not like caps that have gone out of value to muddy up my sound and give me distortion BEFORE I want it. It is very important to match the caps. They don't have to be 105 (.1) but should be all very close to a matching value on any given generator. Yes, reach intro a bag and pull out caps and do the job and it is probably going to sound uneven up and down the board. Kind of like it does when the wax paper caps are left in the organ too long, only more pronounced. RF filters caps needed in the early days because the organs didn't pick up the overtones and crosstalk with those crummy wax-paper caps on them. Recap without RF filters and you are probably not going to like it either. Also, recap the line box and change the resistors there as well. I don't know anybody who didn't absolutely > love the sound of one of my Hammond's when I was done with it. This is after recapping over 100 organs for customers. Even guys that were not sure loved the way they sounded. I always tell people if they don't like it better than when they brought it here, I will put an old wax cap genny back in for them. Never had to do it. Do I like tired old B-2's-3's with wax caps? Yes, indeed. If I am playing some jazz at a decent volume with a soft drummer and a string bass. Nice and phat (I hate that word). Also, if you are trying to copy the sound of a beat to death recording studio Hammond of the old days when recording technology was terrible as well, then an old stocker will sound just fine. Would I gig with it? Absolutely not. Depend on it? Absolutely not. Would I try to keep up in a rock or Top 40 band with it? Absolutely not. Be advised that this is just my opinion, some experience and my person preference in the way I like my Hammond's to sound talking here. Everyone is > entitled to what they like, what they think and what they do. I recap almost all Hammond's. They really need to sound good, strong, and aggressive to me for me to leave them alone. I have left some alone, but this is rare, as well as it only being a matter of time before they too will need it. IN MY OPINION. Thanks for listening. Oh, yeah, I advise to rebuild the A0-28 in the older organs as well. That stuff in there is tired and worn out. Period. Better not forget that 35 year old Leslie either. If it could talk it would say it would like some attention! This will also improve the whole ball of wax ten fold. > John > > > www.HammondStore.com > -- > Subscription Options/Unsubscribe/Archives: http://www.zeni.net/hf/ > Hammond-Leslie FAQ: http://theatreorgans.com/hammond/faq/ > HammondWiki: http://www.dairiki.org/HammondWiki/ > hammond at zk3.dec.com archives: http://zk3.hammondforum.com/
