[HAM] Original Factory Curves: was Re: Wax caps measured and then placed in four pans...David Anderson thermionic27609 at earthlink.netSun Nov 26 20:30:45 CST 2006
I tend to agree. I mean, in a era when one can download information on how to make a nuclear bomb from the internet, it does seem dubious to me that we need to be protected from this information for our own good, which is the argument made by those who still have the data. The argument in its fully fleshed-out form is that if we had access to this data, we would all permanently ruin every single remaining Hammond Organ in existence as we rushed en-masse to recalibrate them precisely to factory standards, merrily jamming pickup magnets into tonewheels as we swung at them with sledge hammers. My own opinion is that this position is deeply paternalistic, but then again, I come from an academic background where we practice open dissemination of information. And, in my experience, far more organs are being destroyed by people hacking them up for parts and selling them on eBay than would ever be damaged by people with calibration curves. I'd like to have the curves simply as a reference. But of course, this is probably wasted typing. Every request for the data seems to renew the resolve of those who have it to bury it even deeper in their backyards, or wherever it's kept. Maybe it's guarded by fire-breathing dragons and a pack of rottweilers......
