When I switched on my HR-40 (which has been resting unused for
quite some time), both 5U4 were starting fireworks in them.
Flashing and orange sparks on both tubes simultaneously.

LR 1D is stamped on the amp chassis.

I'm a bit hesitant to put two new 5U4 into it without being sute
that the cause is identified before that.

Any ideas? Possibly the oil filled can capacitor?

Can one replace the two 5U4 by two 1N4007 without changing the amplifier
characteristics? I mean, would one give up something WRT sound when
using silicon rectifiers?

I would guess the output power would be a bit higher but
the 'compression' characteristics go away.
