[HAM] My first console

Hi Group,
I brought home my first console today - a C3 and Leslie 122 I bought from a church. The organ had not been played for as long as the current and former pastor knew. The oil chart was under the bench lid and had dates logged from 1958 - 1963.

The TG spun freely so I oiled it. Removed the back panels of the Leslie and inspected it. Both speakers spun freely and all wiring looked good. I connected the cables and started the organ. The start motor engaged and spun-up OK. The run motor engaged and carried the load OK. After about 2 minutes the TG developed a bit of a squeal. The Leslie started in fast then dropped down to slow. After another 2 minutes of warm up I got a waterfall sound from the Leslie speaker and noted what I thought was the rectifier tube (OC3) pulsing bright orange. I shut it all down at that point.

I pulled the amp from the Leslie and to my surprise it had been rebuilt at some point. Lots of bright "orange drop" caps and modern resistors. My tube manual identified the OC3 as a Voltage Regulator cold-cathode glow-discharge tube used in voltage regulator applications. So maybe the bright orange glow is OK. (but not the pulsing I'm sure)

I blew out all the spider webs from the amp and re-seated all the tubes, added more oil to the TG and tried it all again. Started OK with no waterfall sound this time and the squeal in the TG stopped. Volume was very low even with the expression pedal all the way down.

Burned my fingers on that stupid ceramic heater thing.

Then came a squeal from the scanner end. I could not tell if it was the run motor or the scanner itself. I noticed the little oil thread between the scanner and motor was broke so I oiled the shaft and bearings directly and let it sit for a while. The scanner-end squeal stopped shortly after restart and volume began to slowly increase. After a few more successful starts the TG is very smooth and quiet and the Leslie has a lot more volume. Not enough to "blow the doors off" the garage, but OK I guess.

When I select the "volume soft" tab I loose all volume. Any ideas on what could be the problem with this?

I have not looked under the pre-amp yet. Do you guys normally rebuild the pre-amp if it has not been done?

Thanks,
JP White
