Charles,
Way back in the early 80s, or maybe earlier(?), Jimmy Smith started playing 
some monstrous material without C/V turned on. "The Boss" is the touchstone 
for this against which all else can be judged and found wanting. I had also 
already heard Leon Spencer do it. Smith also made some great records around 
that time on the Mojo label (Mercury). I fell in love with the straight, 
non-vibrato sound, provided that it was done with very careful and subtle 
expression pedal use. Juicy as chorus vibrato is, and I do love it, there's 
a whole 'nother world of expression out there with the straight tone. Chris 
Foreman clearly gets it.
