[HAM] Fold backGene MacDonald genem at cushcraft.comTue Sep 19 08:38:31 CDT 2006
Thank you all for the responses. I decided not to buy Model A (even with all the upgrades) after all. The old wax caps are 71 years old. I'll keep holding out for an A100. When I said I didn't like the foldback on the lower manual I guess I should have said I wasn't expecting it. It reminded me of running out of keys like on the spinets. But with all the great Hammond players who am I to say I didn't like it. Foldback Hammonds have "complex" (ie more complex than pure sine) tonewheels for the pedals (so you can't just wire those to the manuals, would sound awful). A bass out to a separate amp can give you a little more low end if that's what you feel you're missing - or you can craft your basslines around the foldback point(s) to good effect. Andy I think I'll try crafting the bass lines around the foldback points like Andy suggests....Thanks again. The second tone generator to which you refer was the chorus generator, intended, in pipe organ terms to provide a "celeste" stop effect. Many, including me, considered it ethereally beautiful. It had 49 tone wheels which sounded sharp and flat tones to the original generator; it was turned on by a 49 gang switch operated by a single, unmarled drawbar; there were no "degrees" of chorus; however a similar effect was obtained, (in some people's opinion, not mine), by engaging the switch partially. After the invention of Hammond Vibrato, the Company decided that mixing 50%vibrato and 50%non-vibrato was suffiently close to the original, and only cost the one switch prong and a resistor. Nobody, but NOBODY, on this list EVER uses the current chorus effect for what it was intended, indeed cannot tell C-1 from C-2 from C-3 Fulk
