[HAM] Single louver horn compartment damping material?Kon Zissis kziss at ozemail.com.auTue Apr 3 01:02:29 CDT 2007
Hi William. There is an apparent slight volume loss when I put the carpet damping strips in the treble compartment but this volume loss is mainly because the upper midrange and the treble is mellowed down so therefore this slight volume loss is not a problem . Without the carpet damping strips in place the sound of the treble horn reflects back from the hard wooden surfaces inside the treble compartment and this causes the upper midrange and the treble response to be louder. Because the Jensen V21 in my Leslie sounds quite bright, the mellowing effect caused by the carpet damping strips actually makes the V21 sound better because it takes away some of the shrillness thus producing a warmer sound which I prefer and I like the more direct sounding chorale and tremolo effect. I have the Leslie back side facing me on the right side of my C3 and I normally have the back cover removed when playing the C3 so that I get the more direct chorale and tremolo sound so this automatically produces more volume than when the back cover is on even when the carpet damping strips are in place. When I put the back cover on whilst the carpet damping strips are in place then there is definitely a noticeable mellowing effect and although with the Leslie right next to me in my room this mellowing sounds pleasant to my ears but if you want to play on stage with maximum projection of the sound then this will not cut through as well and it may sound dull or muddy from a distance. The carpet damping strips can easily be put in or taken out of the treble compartment of my Leslie 122 depending on which particular sound I want. I will not be gluing or stapling them in place because I want to be able to put them in or take them out but I can secure them in place by tying them with strings going between the louvres so that the carpet strips do not fall out of their place and hit the treble horn when the tremolo setting is on. All the best.
