Since it's my fault for starting this discussion, my purpose was simply to discuss the fact that these specific models of cabs originally had damping material around the horn compartments, something I'd never seen brought up before. Whether one likes it or not is certainly a matter of taste and the musical effect one is trying to achieve. It also opens up possibilities for "tuning" the horn's effect to one's taste by putting in a little bit of damping--or a lot of it--or removing it entirely. Or, if you're trying to emulate a certain "sound," it might be because some other player has a 21H with its padding intact, while yours has been removed.

I have noticed that the amplifier used in both the 31H and 21H has an extra treble-reducing capacitor specified for use in the 31H, which, to my knowledge, never used damping material. Or did it?

At the risk of starting another firestorm, it does seem interesting to me that many things have been done to Leslies to make them sound brighter (modern coupling capacitors, removing the horn cotton, etc...), but then a recapped organ sounds too bright. Is there a connection here?
