The only damping material I've seen used in a 31H was located in the front corners of the lower rotor compartment. The material looked like horse-hair carpet padding. Since the bottom side of the 31H cabinet is open, placing the Leslie on different surfaces would also affect the tone. I've never seen any material used in the upper compartment of a 31H. Maybe because the amp was up there and could start a fire. (Or, Don thought it sounded just fine without it.)
