[HAM] Single louver horn compartment damping material?

I’m in a pretty good position to do a controlled experiment: I’ve got a 21H and a 31H, both with original woofers (Jensen field coils) and treble drivers (V-21s). And both are powered by 21H amps in good condition.

Even if I switch the amps or treble drivers between the cabinets, the 31H cabinet always sounds brighter (and louder, too). Sometimes, I’ve thought that this is because the 31H has a second row of louvers on top or because the 31H treble driver may be closer to ear level when you’re playing. But, until I read this thread, I never noticed that my 21H also has that horsehair padding on all four sides of the upper chamber. (There is none on my 31H.) I think that’s primarily what’s making the difference.

Frankly, I wouldn’t want my Leslies to sound alike. A lot of the magic of having two Leslies is that with each sounding a little different, and ramping up and down at different speeds, it adds interest and complexity to the sound.

By the way, does anyone know what ever became of Van Gelder’s fabled Hammond?

  Alan
