Hi Joe.
I have heard about Rudy Van Gelder sometimes taking a line out signal
and mixing this with the main signal from the miked up Leslie but I
cannot confirm how true this is. However I believe that one way to
tell if a line out signal has been added to the mix is by the character
of the key click. When the organ is played through a Leslie 21H ,
22H , 122 etc cabinet the key click has a more natural ,woody sounding
"toof toof toof" kind of sound due to the frequency response of the
Leslie amplifier and the horn but with the direct signal taken through
a line out you would get a brighter " tst tst tst" or a "tap dancing"
kind of key click sound similar to what you hear when you listen to the
Hammond through headphones that have been connected to the GG
terminals of the AO28 preamp.
As well as the brighter key click , the organ sound would be brighter (
especially when using the last few drawbars ) and unless a reverb
effect has been added to the direct line out signal this signal would
sound very dry without any room acoustic on it.

The Jimmy Smith track " Ode to Billy Joe" ( on the album 'Talkin Verve,
The roots of Acid Jazz' ) clearly has the bright tst tst tst kind of
key click sound which suggests to me that a line out signal has been
added to the mix. The tracks ' Groove drops' and perhaps ' Hobo flats'
also sound to me like they might include the line out signal in the
mix.
All the best.
