What should I use, gasoline? I know I'll get flamed for this - but sure. Gas - dangerous as it may be - washes away gunk and reduces oil. Along with compressed air, there's no residue. Another alternative is an alcohol based spray, which I used for almost everything. I think we need not compare an automotive starter to a little 3 ounce Hammond start motor, or other small Hammond parts. Using gasoline **carefully** .... and doing so outdoors - poses little to no risk. In the days of Prokeys, I used gas regularly - *outdoors*. And I probably never used more than 4-6 ounces at a time anyway, with a small, stiff brush. I'd estimate no less than 48 vibrato scanners were rebuilt here over the years, and ALL of them were scrubbed with gasoline. I believe we're all intelligent enough to exercise extreme safety with something as flammable as gas.
