[HAM] Blindfold Treat # 8OF scott195 at centurytel.netTue Apr 24 22:28:12 CDT 2007
This one's for organ fans that like that cool, straight, no-vib sound, straight-ahead in a minor key. The player had obviously heard and loved Jimmy Smith's "The Boss," but this IS NOT Jimmy Smith. Like "The Boss," it features cleanly-played and perfectly-timed arpeggios surrounding the key of D minor, and some so-called modal comping and soloing. The guitarist is Melvin Sparks. Even if you don't care for his solo much, this is a good time to check out the great organ comping and bass. How did he/she get such a clean and clear bass line? That's what I wanna know. No wait, I was supposed to tell you. 1. Perfect left-hand timing. 2. Perfectly-timed pedal taps, IOW, early enough. 3. A trio who lets his sound come through and doesn't make him turn up the 4. Expression pedal too much. Very well-controlled dynamically. Those who play with a drummer who is too loud will know exactly what I'm talking about. This is a longish cut, 7.29 MB: <www.organfreak.com/listen/BlindfoldTestNo8.mp3> To us jazz organ freaks, this is a classic cut, so much so that I heard my ex GF play it on her morning jazz show last week on WNCU. (Raleigh/Durham...great streaming broadcast. This is where I first heard Chris Foreman, another super-clean player.) After you guess who this is, I will put up another excellent cut from this same vinyl so's we don't forget about it.
