[HAM] Leon Spencer Bonus Track!OF scott195 at centurytel.netWed Apr 25 12:18:46 CDT 2007
This is my other favorite from the "Sneak Preview" record by Leon Spencer, Jr. It's a very jolly "blues" in 'A' (!), that is, it uses the blues form but some of the chords are substitutions, and very nice ones at that. I used to use this tune in my sets for years, it's such an upper. Beware, those who want to play it because it sounds easy: The "turnaround," that is, the final G13 and A13 at the end of the progression, is timed differently in the head than in the solos, and if you play the wrong one, you're screwed. Sorry about the sound quality-- I removed as much "pop and crackle" as I could from this old vinyl, but taking out more would have added digital noise. I think the sound, way in the background, of voices, may actually be voices. That is, maybe Leon is running a commentary while playing, I dunno. You can barely hear it. On this cut, Rudy's C-3 reveals itself by the constant dropping-out of harmonics on the top 'C' key, also noticeable on certain Jimmy Smith records. My theory is that both players kind of liked the effect and used it on purpose. I know I would have. <http://www.organfreak.com/listen/FirstGravy.mp3>
