[HAM] Adjusting pickup rodsAlan Lenhoff alenhoff at yahoo.comSat Aug 25 19:27:13 CDT 2007
Mission accomplished! And it only took help from the four people who responded to my question, my daughter (who helped me move the organ away from the wall cant be too careful a few months after hernia surgery), my neighbor (who donated a ground lug) and Scott Hawthorn, whom I called with some questions. (Well, actually I spoke TWICE with Scott. As an electronics illiterate, how am I supposed to know that lower resistor values result in greater volume reduction?) ;-) Anyway, after using my poor mans decade box (a pair of alligator clip leads and a bag full of resistors), I soldered in a resistor to lower the volume of the offending tone. The magic value turned out to be 51 ohms. The organ sounds great! (And just as I finished, the sun came out for the first time in days in southern Michigan. I decided to take this as an omen from Laurens Hammond that my work was done, and I ought to take a celebratory 30 mile bike ride. So, now the organ sounds perfect, and Im high on biking endorphins. Life is good.) Thanks to all who discouraged me from fiddling with the pickup rods. A special thanks to Scott, whose patience and detailed instructions were invaluable. (And thanks to Don for letting Scott come out to play!)
