Scholarly as the article sounds, the writer doesn't know what the hell he/she is talking about! "Commonly-used term, 'electric boogaloo'"??? In 40 years of playing funk, R&B, blues, and jazz, I have never once heard that term. Then then they go on to claim that "electric boogaloo" (which they are trying to distinguish from "Latin Boogaloo) was the funk version, invented in 1975. What a load of crap! We were boogalooin' to James brown boogaloo songs in the mid-60s! Check out "Mashed Potatoes USA" that I posted recently. Total boogaloo, early 60s. It is a dance, and it has to be seen to be described. A common example of a boogaloo beat is Lou Donaldson's/Lonnie Smith's old hit, "Alligator Boogaloo," though that tune lacks much of the complexity featured in many boogaloos. -Scott "Can't Believe I'm Posting This" H.
