I've always thought of it similar to what was called "soul jazz".
Think what would happen when jazz players tried to play rock or
something but they were too hip.  You'd get blues progressions,
straight eighth notes and a somewhat cornball drum beat.  I do love it
so.

Also add Donaldson's "Everything I Play is Funky", "Midnight Creeper",
"Funky Mama".  Another classic is John Patton's "The Turnaround" from
Let 'em Roll.  You'll probably find Grant Green sitting on the guitar
chair in a lot of these.  I can't think of an example made without the
organ.
