[HAM] Cleaning Questionrleonard at cudrc.com rleonard at cudrc.comMon Feb 12 08:47:39 CST 2007
I tried some of the "Howard's Restore-a Finish" that "OF" suggested. It works! The wood on my pedals (the back end where the foot rest is) was really dry looking and had a very little of the lacquer left on them. They're not "like new" now but, they do look 1000% better. I also cleaned (with "Brasso") the big knobs that let you adjust the foot rest and the screws that hold the top piece on under the footrest. Those big knobs and those screws have a "copper colored" look to them and the little ferrules under the screws look like brass. I think I'll clean the big thumb screws that hold the back of the organ on next. I suppose all this stuff was bright and shiny when the organ was new. I'm trying to clean all the brass pieces like, all the screws, hinges, top lock, thumb screws, everything I can that will clean up and look shiny. I never paid much attention to those pieces before, till I saw a picture somewhere on the net a few weeks ago of an organ with all the pieces cleaned. It makes a BIG difference in the appearance of the organ. I wish I had done some "before" and "after" pictures. If I had known it was going to make such a difference I would have. I guess that was 50 years of dirt, dust and furniture polish built up on there. Probably got Pledge'd once every 4 months. When I got it home, I started a regimen of a complete rubdown with lemon oil then 3-4 days later (when it looked dry) a going over with Scott's Liquid Gold. Wait 3-4 days and repeat. Seems the lemon oil would soak down in and the Scott's would 'leach' it and the dirt out. It actually took over a month (5 coats or so of each) before the rag quit coming up dirty!
