[HAM] Leslie motors and oilingTed Davis ted at wetnoodle.netSat Feb 17 13:29:49 CST 2007
I had a friend over a few weeks ago, and he sat down at my L, and proceeded to play, over what I was playing. He played a few chords and then proclaimed Ted your guitar is out of tune”. After using a guitar tuner I realized it was the Organ. My E was his C. ☹ The motor was not just warm, it was hot to the touch. Hot enough to blister the skin If left in contact for longer than a few seconds. I was bummed to say the least. I was convinced that the shaft was dragging and TG was dry and in a bind. Even though the TG didn’t squeal, it was a little scratch sounding but not terribly noisy. So on a hunch from an under documented thread I read on one the Hammond online resources, I called a motor company and found a suitable capacitor. That was exactly what the doctor ordered; the motor now runs somewhat cool, a little warm, but no where near too hot to the touch. Most of all it is in tune. I’d check the run capacitor, before waiting two weeks for the same results. While the TG shouldn’t be loud, it should make some noise, about like a sewing machine running in another room with the door closed. Especially if you have the top and back off working on it.
