[HAM] Joey D in Davis, CAKeith Cary kcary at dcn.orgThu Jan 25 12:28:13 CST 2007
Hi, I saw Joey D in Davis last night at the Mondavi Center. He'll be there a couple more nights, I think. Pretty cool show. He played one tune really quietly, kind of transparent, with what sounded like a wah-wah, but I didn't see his foot doing the wah-wah thing. Does anyone know what that might be? It was a cool sound. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the song, I only remember that it had "just" in the title, for all the good that'll do. I'm not much of a player, as will be obvious from my next question: sometimes it seemed he was playing bass with his foot, sometimes with his left hand, sometimes both and in all cases it seemed totally automatic, like he had a separate module in his brain dedicated to playing bass better than I ever could on string bass. Does anyone have any idea as to when he, or anyone, plays with foot or with left hand, or both? It never sounded muddy or cluttered. Always just right. Man, I wish he'd been turned so we could see his hands. If you're in N. Calif I recommend the show. It's in a pretty small, night-clubby venue below the main stage. He has a cold and was asking for a tissue. The management wasn't around, so someone from the audience came up with a pack. His whole presence was pretty homey. Keith
