Well, actually, paying a phonograph through it is/was the official,
original, intended use for it.

I actually believe that phono equalization is applied to the input
signal at this point.

It was intended as a "play along" feature. Not sure why you couldn't
just play along to the record player (unless perhaps a console/Leslie
setup would generally overpower the home victrolas of the time...)

For the bass trick I think you need to decouple the upper and lower
manuals and then you can play monophonic left hand bass on an L.
