Martin Petersen brought to my attention on another list that Blue Note Plans
to release a CD of previously unreleased tracks by Jimmy Smith recorded in
1961. Its just amazing to me that BlueNote never bothered to sell these
tunes. In my view that was his seminal period in terms of defining the JOS
sound. I'm curious about why the producers axed these tunes for so long,
and why Smith went along with it. I'll be ordering the CD as soon as it
comes out.

Here's what they say:

Sometimes the vaults of Blue Note are like Ali Baba's cave. The treasures on
this disc have been sitting in the vaults since they were recorded on June
22, 1961 and are released here for the first time. Smith's trio became one
of the most popular groups in jazz in the late '50s/early-'60s, with Smith
virtually inventing the modern organ sound. With guitarist Quentin Warren
and drummer Donald Bailey, Smith burns through a series of standards and
originals in a session which was recorded just before Smith exploded as a
national star on the pop and R&B charts.
