[HAM] How to Squabblejoe d joedoria at hotmail.comMon Jun 4 21:29:54 CDT 2007
>>The "squabble," as Joey refers to it, >does consist of the locked-hand 1-4-5-8 thing, just as Jimmy Smithpioneered >it on such tunes as "Mack the Knife<< Jazz Scene USA, JOS playing Mack on that - you will see and hear he's not always doing 1-4-5-1 (in fact, quite a bit isn't). or check out Jimmy plays soft for you (and a few others of that time) where you can hear that he's not adhering only to the 1-4-5-1. Ya know though there is a lot of 1-4-5-1 of course, and I think it might be a case sometimes where it's just very general and easier to describe the squabble in basic terms (which is normal), but i would highly suggest also focusing on explicit chordal squabbling. Get those extensions in there, 3rd and 7th movements, etc. > >You'll find it will affect things when it comes time to dig into chord > >soloing and the squabble. > >practice breathing between your lines! > >Joe, this is excellent advice! I just had a talk with myself last night, >and gave myself the exact same lecture, since my squabbling has never >satisfied me. Me too! I know i always need these reminders (part of the wonderful process i guess - we'll be practicing till we croak). _________________________________________________________________ Need a break?
