Why is your show in the middle of the night??? (9:30 PM :-) ) But I would
dearly love to hear what you've done with his material. Guess I'll call the
club today.

Now, these aren't charts that McDuff made-- I made 'em, but I took my time
and was obsessively careful to make sure they were right. And Jack checked
a few of them out (he read and wrote music fluently) and pronounced them
"perfect." He endorsed them to the point that, when I was selling them, we
split the $$$. He acted absolutely tickled-to-death that anyone would take
the trouble to chart his music.

He wrote everything down too, but wrote no titles at the tops of the
sheets, and threw them all in the closet. He said he had no idea what some
of these tunes were actually called, and when I would ask him about some of
them, he'd make me sing them before he knew what tunes I was talking about!
I once requested "Misconstrued" at one of his shows (packed house at
Parnell's), and he said, "I don't know what that is! Why don't you come up
here and play it?" (I declined.)

Some of the charts I made are based on some fabulous arrangements that I
recorded there and never appeared on records, and these are among my
favorites. Prolific as he was, some of his best stuff never got pressed,
for example, the later, much more elaborate arrangement of "Blues 1 & 8,"
likewise "Another Goodun'," a chart of "Killer Joe" that contains two
separate introductions (stunning) and a long, slow-blues outro. Also, the
brilliant and masterful "Gospelette," recorded as "Fly Away" in a terrible,
watered-down version that some producer obviously f-ed-up. When I listen to
that particular tune and think about how it never got out, it can bring me
to tears, it's so good.

I spend hours playing records and stuff for my friends, (don't I Buck?), no
charge. That's total fun for me. I would like to have been a jazz DJ.
Fixing organs is another matter, but I'm not expensive. Please e-mail me
your best phone number, and answer the damn phone!
