[HAM] Alignment of Start Motor. Warning about exposed AC mains terminal on the plastic bobbin of the start motor coil.Kon Zissis kziss at ozemail.com.auThu Mar 22 08:15:13 CDT 2007
Hi everyone. I have never encountered the alignment problem with the start motor so I do not know of a proper solution but I thought that it would be a good idea to post a warning here for anyone inspecting or touching the start motor to first pull the organ power plug from the mains AC wall socket or power board strip before touching the start motor because on my own 1962 C3 and on other Hammond organs I have come across there is an exposed solder terminal on the plastic bobbin of the start motor coil and there is always live AC voltage on this solder terminal even when the organ is switched off. When I first bought my 1962 C3 in 2002 I opened the back up to look inside. The organ was switched off but the plug was connected to the mains AC power board strip, and whilst going over the tone wheel generator I placed my hand on the start motor and my fingers touched the exposed terminal on the plastic bobbin and I received a nasty 240 volts AC electric shock and because my hand was also touching the grounded chassis of the motor and the tone wheel generator , the electric shock caused the house safety switch to switch off thus blacking out the house and thus also causing the inconvenience of having to reset the various digital clocks of the clock radios and the oven clocks in the house . Another time I accidentally dropped a small jewellers style screwdriver on to the start motor and the screw driver made contact with the exposed solder terminal on the bobbin and the grounded metal chassis of the end of the tone wheel generator and again this caused the house safety switch to switch off thus blacking out the house and arousing the peeved annoyance of my parents and brother as well as the nuisance of having to reset all various digital clocks in the house. The lesson from all this is to make sure that the plug is pulled out of the mains AC socket before touching the start motor. All the best. Kon
