That resistor in the figure is inside the chorus switch mechanism,
under the preset panel.  Many people advocate removing that resistor
and putting a pot in its place.  This is a lot more work than just
adding one externally to see if that might be the problem.  What this
mod will do is to increase the chorus depth and it is pretty easy to
try out.
