I think you will be largely disappointed, I'm afraid. Since you know in 
your head how a "normal" Leslie setup sounds, your variant (where really 
only the mids will be spinning) won't even come close to what you're 
used to hearing.

As far as external amps go, though: I recently bought a LAB series L2 
amp, which I intended to use for bass guitar. As it turns out, I tried 
it on my ampless "760-in-a-122-cab" gig Leslie, and it sounds fantastic! 
This little solid state amp has a glow and a depth that would make you 
think it was made for Hammond amplification. I am absolutely stunned by it.
