Yeah Joe, you may feel old and seasoned at 38 (as did I at that age), but hey, I am TWENTY YEARS older than you, and when James Brown put out "Papa" and "Fat Bag," I was already playing organ, while you weren't even born yet! That's what I mean by being around for the birth of funk. I was. Boogaloo came along just a few years before that. I worked at a theater called "Black Arts/West" as a lighting designer, and every night I got to hear live soul (Floyd Standifer, no less) and boogaloo music and watch the dancing by the cast. I heard and saw the music as it evolved. Dan and Pernell Alexander (Hendrix's cousin and teacher) were playing funk in the Eagles Auditorium in 1967, and I was there then too. And people were fascinated-- it was all so new and fresh. I think you could play circles around me these days, laddie, but you should learn to listen to your elders, you young whippersnapper! Hey, here's an example to argue about: what would you call Dr. Lonnie's tune, "Back Track"? (On the "Too Damn Hot!" CD) Huh? Huh? (Hint: I call it FUNK.)
