There is a movie circulating around the net showing Hammond tonewheels being "hobbed" on a machine that looks something like a lathe. A stack of 75 or so blanks are secured to an arbor, and a cutting tool that looks like a screw gear with perpendicular slots cut across the threads travels into the stack, both turning at the same RPM in opposite directions--sort of a controlled crash with the hob tool cutting the teeth out of the blanks. I used to supervise a gear machining department at a tractor factory, so watching the process brings back lots of memories-- particularly the smell of cutting oil. Regards, Dave Bishop
