Quite right Malte, many cars were run on wood gas (char gas, charcoal gas etc. whatever you want to call it) including in Australia. Kon simply isn't aware of such things and perhaps his family were not actually living here in Australia at the time. It was relatively common as you say in Europe and out here in Australia due to restricted supply of gasoline, aka petrol.
