[HAM] Question for any Aussie memberKon Zissis kziss at ozemail.com.auWed Apr 9 17:18:07 CDT 2008
Hi Geoff. My parents left their village in northern Greece and they migrated to Australia in the early 1960's so therefore they don't know about what the situation was like with petrol restrictions here in Australia during WW2. I was born in 1971 so therefore I was not around to see the wood gas powered cars used during WW2 and I have not seen any surviving examples of these particular cars even though there are plenty of other surviving vintage cars from the pre WW2 era. It would be interesting to see what these cars looked like and how the engines sounded and to know how often they needed to be refuelled and how fast they could go. All the best. Kon Geoff Williamson wrote: Quite right Malte, many cars were run on wood gas (char gas, charcoal gas etc. whatever you want to call it) including in Australia. Kon simply isn't aware of such things and perhaps his family were not actually living here in Australia at the time. It was relatively common as you say in Europe and out here in Australia due to restricted supply of gasoline, aka petrol.
