I'd say you're dead on with your second point but dead wrong on the first. Decades ago stuff was built like a brick outhouse (polite terminology). Today it's all lowest pricepoint possible. I work in the electronics industry, I see this every day. I get posts from the clone wheel group as well as this group. I'd venture to say I see more "broken" posts on the clone wheel than "broken" posts here. And yes most of those do involve replacement of entire motherboards, circuit boards, which if not under warranty seem to run about half the price of the brand new instrument. (Hmm, maybe instrument is too kind a word...)
