Virgil Fox. That's the name that was on the tip of my tongue in a recent
conversation. 

I saw Mr. Fox at Wolf Trap in '74. Check the thesaurus for phenomenal for a
start to the superlatives that fit his performance. He channeled Bach, man. 

The cat played Dance ala Gigue on pedals. My calves ached hearing it. 

Thanks for jogging my memory banks.
