In order to remove the last oxygen atoms from the tube during manufacture
they burn a material that binds the oxygen. That process silvers up the
inside of the tube, usually at the top but sometimes on one side ("getter
flash"). Doesn't guarantee the tube is still good, but it isn't an
indication of failure, either. If the getter flash turns whitish inside it
can be an indication that there is a leak in the tube letting some air back
in.
De-Oxit removes corrosion on the socket side as well as the pin surface.
Could be that the pin receivers in the socket have spread loose. With
caution, they can be retensioned.
