I hate to sound like a broken record--or Faye Dunaway as Joan  
Crawford on the subject of wire hangers, but.....

DO NOT USE WD-40 ON POROUS BRONZE BEARINGS.

This comes directly from the people who make WD-40, and they say it's  
not the right product.

Imagine porous bronze bearings as a kind of metal sponge. It is  
possible for the sponge to get gunked up with dried up old oil.

What you want is some kind of solvent to dissolve the sticky stuff  
and get oil moving through the bearing again.

The main ingredient in WD-40 is, believe it or not, good old kerosene  
or something similar, but it also has other stuff in it that protects  
steel from rust. This is great for keeping steel tools from rusting,  
but bad for bronze bearings because it leaves behind yet MORE stuff  
that doesn't belong in there.

Naphtha (aka lighter fluid) and denatured alcohol are both things  
I've found good for cleaning bearings. Use them to wash the sticky  
stuff off, and then re-oil. Makers of bronze bearings specify  
"turbine oil" of the proper viscosity, which basically means a fairly  
pure oil without detergents or other additives.

This goes for the porous bronze bearings in Leslie motors, too.

Enough for today. Back to cleaning my vinyl records with Comet..... ;-)
