If you or someone on the list can give me direction, I would be very appreciative.? 



I realize from a purest view, the actual tube pre-amp is preferred, but are the TREK II preamps also suitable?

This is probably either failed electrolytic caps or a broken ground wire 
unrelated to the pre-amp.  Unless you buy from a dealer, your next AO-28 
might have issues, too.  Either can be fixed for a lot less than a new 
pre-amp.   This list can direct you on how to go about diagnosis if you (or 
a friend) have soldering experience.
