Actually, I did something very similar to what you describe with aluminum.  

I used a lid from my beater A(bomination)102.  I had a design where the legs
folded in from the front to the back and the lid dropped down.  I even had a
heel rest that dropped into position.  It was a pretty nifty contraption -
very light and when it folded up it was less than 3" thick.  But aluminum
can be a little flimsy and it had a racked a little - not a lot but enough
that I was thinking about it from time to time throughout the gig.  I meant
to go back and improve it but space in the van was not a big enough issue
and I stole back the lid, put it away and never got back to it.  I'll go dig
it out and post some pictures when I get a chance.
