The Roadster Factory rebuilds its own engines in its own little factory
called C.A.R. Components. We provide this service to make it possible for
enthusiasts to do their own engine removal and replacement without having to
do the specialized work of engine rebuilding. Our new mechanic at C.A.R.
Components is Tom Spadafora. Tom ran his own shop for many years, and he
has built many street engines and many drag racing engines during his long
career. He is strongly committed to providing excellence to TRF customers in
the engines he rebuilds at C.A.R. Components. When you have your engine
rebuilt at C.A.R. Components, you get Tom's integrity and pride in his work,
and you get a full warranty for one year or twelve-thousand miles. If your
engine fails due to faults in materials or workmanship, we will replace it with
another rebuilt unit, or we will rebuild your engine again.
Engines for rebuilding are carefully disassembled and visually checked for
major problems such as cracks and irreparable damage. Later, critical parts are
magnafluxed to avoid using parts which will lead to failure. All core plugs are
removed to facilitate cleaning and removal of potential blockages. Blocks and
cranks are hot tanked and machined, including reboring, block decking, crank
grinding, and balancing. Every engine rebuilt by C.A.R. Components is fully
balanced--flywheels and clutches can be balanced as well for a small
additional charge. All threaded holes are cleaned with a bottoming tap. Blocks
and cranks are carefully cleaned by hand after machining. Rods are rebuilt
with new small-end bushes. Cams are reground for stock engines and chosen
as specified for modified engines. New AE pistons are used exclusively, along
with King bearings, and all clearances are checked with micrometers during
assembly. Other new parts include timing chains, timing gears, oil pumps, and
tappets on short blocks and valves, springs, guides, and seats on cylinder heads.
All core plugs and gaskets and most hardware are replaced with new when the
engine is reassembled. Our new engine mechanic, Tom Spadafora, states that
we provide much, much more detailing than what is offered on standard
rebuilds of engines in the general market place.
Cylinder heads are stripped, core plugs are removed, and they are hot
tanked. Valve seats are replaced with hardened seats to withstand the use of
unleaded fuel, and bronze valve guides are fitted along with new valves.
Precision valve grinding is performed and then valves are hand lapped with
valve grinding paste to insure a perfect seal. New springs and keepers are
fitted. All oil passages are cleaned, and new core plugs are fitted.
Major engine assemblies include cylinder heads assembled to short engine
with gaskets, rebuilt rocker assemblies, and new push rods.
