Over the years, TRF has arranged for the manufacture of several thousand steel
battery box replacements for TR2 and TR3 models. The first one was made by a friend
for my own car around 1974, and that first box is still in my TR3A. The same friend,
one Ken Williams of Brush Valley, Pennsylvania, made several hundred over the years
with all parts made completely by hand.
Later battery boxes were made by several sheet metal shops around our area, and
we imported some from England. Several years back, we had one-hundred made by
another local shop, but they refused to make a second run. Most recently, the only
source is one in England, but the latest English boxes do not include the brackets for the
dash support stays, and they are generally flimsy and dimensionally incorrect.
During the summer of 2007, John Swauger and I approached a local shop with which we deal very
effectively. It took a few tries, but we now have all of the problems worked out, and we will have plenty
of steel battery box replacements in stock for Christmas 2007. All dimensions should be correct, all holes
made to the correct size, and all brackets and a captive nut included in the assembly. I have had the box
made one-gauge heavier than original to add strength, and I have made the side and front flange 1/8th
inch wider to add strength, and the surrounding metal may be damaged during removal of the old battery
box. I am not easy to please, but I am pleased with the current preproduction sample. I want your car to
be as good as it can be...
